  Head Instructor - Sensei Denise Black, Nidan

    Denise Black is a Nidan, 2nd Dan (Degree), black belt in Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo and a student of Sensei Nate Mason.  She has been instructing since 1996, and opened the Blue Hill branch of Eastern Maine Karate Dojos in July of 2002.

    Since 1998, she has worked with local parents groups, schools, and communities, to develop and successfully implement after school programming for the Blue Hill, Sedgwick, Brooklin, and Penobscot elementary schools.  These programs are provided to school age children and home schooled children free of charge, and are the first of their kind in Hancock County.

    She has also taught and assisted in many self-defense and awareness/prevention programs for various organizations and schools, for youth and adults in Hancock and Washington Counties.  Her defense program entitled "The Womanly Art of Self Defense and Empowerment" has been specifically designed for women of all ages and abilities.  Awareness and Prevention 101: is offered for youth and teens in area schools on a regular basis.

Sensei Black also teaches weekly classes for tots, youth, teens, and adults of all ages at our new studio location at 269 Mines Road in Blue Hill.

 

 Personal History

  • Started formal training in Shorin-Ryu Matsumura-Seito (Kenshin-Kan) with Sensei Stan Wilbur in Ellsworth ME, 1996.

  • Temporary break from martial arts training for maternity leave, July 2000.

  • Resumed training with Sensei Nate Mason, October 2000.

  • Tested for Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) , June 23, 2001.

  • Women's Awareness & Prevention Seminar, Blue Hill Consolidated School, April 2002.

  • Awareness & Prevention Seminar, Lubec Health Center, June 2002.

  • Opened Blue Hill branch of Eastern Maine Karate Dojos, July 2002.

  • Young Adult's Awareness & Prevention Seminar, Blue Hill Consolidated School, November 2002

  • Established Blue Hill after school karate program, January 2003.

  • Established Sedgwick after school karate program, March 2003.

  • Established Brooklin after school karate program, April 2003.

  • Developed "The Womanly Art of Self Defense and Empowerment", April 2004

  • Promoted to Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt), June 4, 2005.

  • Trains regularly with her teacher Sensei Nate Mason, and his teacher Sensei Stan Wilbur.

  • Attends annual seminars with Hanshi Kise, Kaicho Kise.
