Sensei Stan Wilbur, Rokudan


     Stan Wilbur is a Sensei and the Eastern Maine Representative to the Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo Federation and the All Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo Federation.  He is a  Rokudan (6thDegree) Black belt in Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito and a student of Hanshi Fusei Kise of Okinawa, Japan.  He has been instructing since 1983 and opened his first dojo in 1985 in Jonesport, Maine.  He has 5 active adult ranked black belts, one of which operates multiple schools in Eastern Maine.   He currently teaches private black belt classes, trains local area police and security organizations in self-defense and weapon tactics, and provides free demonstrations and seminars to local area schools.

Personal History

  • Started formal training in Shorin-ryu Matsumura Orthodox Karate-do & Kobudo in December 1974 with Sensei Jeff Morse in Cherryfield, Maine.

  • Received his 7 Kyu Certification from Sensei Jeff Morse, Sandan, signed by Master Hohan Soken on June 2, 1975.

  • Began teaching at the University of Maine at Machias, Spring Semester 1983.

  • Received the rank of Shodan on December 17, 1984.

  • Opened his first dojo in Jonesport, Maine in February 1985 with Dean McGray.

  • Received the rank of Nidan from Sensei Jeffrey Morse on June 30, 1989.

  • Opened the Cherryfield branch dojo, 1991.

  • Received a NWR contract to instruct at the Winter Harbor Naval Station, January 1992.

  • Opened the Levant and Carmel branch of Eastern Maine Kenshin Kan Karate Dojos, spring 1992.

  • Opened the Ellsworth branch of Eastern Maine Kenshin Kan Karate Dojos on September 24, 1993.

  • Instructed a Women's Self Defense course for Eastern Maine Technical College in Bangor, Maine in 1993.

  • Received the rank of Sandan from Shihan Greg Lazarus on May 2, 1994.

  • Received the rank of Sandan in Bo Jitsu, Sai Jitsu, Kama Jitsu, Tonfa Jitsu, and Nunchaku Jitsu on May 1, 1995.

  • Received a Dedicated Service Award from Hanshi Fusei Kise in June 1995.

  • Traveled  to Okinawa, Japan and trained at the Hanshi Kise's Hombu Dojo in November 1995.

  • Received the rank of Yondan from Shihan Greg Lazarus on May 18, 1996.

  • Certified International Police Self Defense Instructor on January 5, 1999.

  • Received the rank of Godan (5th Degree) from Shihan Greg Lazarus on June 23, 2001.

  • Opened the Trenton branch of Eastern Maine Matsumura Seito on July 1, 2005.

  • Traveled to Okinawa, Japan and trained with Hanshi Fusei Kise and Kaicho Isao Kise on February 27, 2006.

  • Promoted to the rank of Rokudan (6th Degree) by Grandmaster Fusei Kise on March 7, 2006.

  • Attends annual seminars with Hanshi Kise and Kaicho Kise.
